Sweetened Condensed Milk + Orange Juice

by Rita
(Florida, USA)

With two (2) tablespoon of Condensed Milk (= 130 calories) mixed with 8 ounces of Orange Juice (= 110 calories) I have a 240 calorie drink which tastes good for my grandson. I only use 100% natural orange juice, not from concentrate.

I also use the Condensed Milk as a topping for Ice Cream with Strawberries or Chocolate Syrup.

Condensed Milk can be found in the canned milk section of the supermarket and is not expensive.

Editor's note
Condensed milk is a great calorie booster and your ideas are wonderful for children who love sweet foods. As you said, it has many calories in a very small volume and can be used as a topping or ingredient to add calories and fat to a recipe.

If anyone is unfamiliar with sweetened condensed milk, it is milk which the water has been evaporated and sugar is added. It is a very thick, syrupy liquid that comes in a can and is very sweet. Condensed milk is different from evaporated milk because it has sugar added, whereas evaporated milk is just the thick milk.

Since most of the water is removed from the milk and sugar is added, the result is a very high calorie food (2 tbsp= 130 calories). Condensed milk is high in fat and carbohydrates.

If your child is not a fan of very sweet foods, evaporated milk is also reasonably high in calories, 2 tablespoons has approximately 40 calories. Although this doesn’t even compare to the amount of calories in condensed milk, evaporated milk can be a great addition to the foods your child regularly eats to give him a small boost in calories.

These milks can both be used as ingredients in smoothies to create high calorie liquid supplements to help your child gain weight. Since many children love very sweet foods, they may be perfect.

White chocolate

by Claire
(Malta)

My son has cerebral palsy and is also a picky eater. When he was weaned off the ng tube he was putting on weight very slowly so I used to melt a cube or two of white chocolate in his porridge so increase the calorie content (35 extra calories). This helped his weight stay on the charts instead of sinking below as would have otherwise happened.

Metameal by Metagenics

by Karen
(Melbourne, Australia)

I started using MetaMeal by a company called Metagenics. It is an undenatured whey protein powder for kids ages 6 months to 12 years. MetaMeal is a vanilla powder that makes a delicous drink that has heaps of vitamins and minerals. It also includes omega 3 fatty acids and colostrum which are wonderful nutrients for children. We give it to my son before bed daily and he loves it. 2 scoops have 107 calories and it has really helped him gain weight.

Note: Metagenics is a great company with many high quality supplements. Previously they were only available through a medical provider and could not be ordered by a lay person, however Metagenics products can now be ordered online through certain companies. Use caution when ordering however, you want to make sure it's the real thing and not an imitation.

Nestle Nido

by Ivory S
(Denver, CO )

Nido is whole powdered milk. You can mix it into anything; milk, smoothies, applesauce, yogurt, etc. I bake with it and it offers more nutrients than using cream or half and half.
