Liquids Only:  What To Do When Your Child Only Drinks

For a child who will only accept liquids, a supplemental drink such as Pediasure or Boost Kids Essentials can lay the foundation and ensure you child is getting the necessary nutrition. These drinks have a balanced amount of fat, protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals.

If you would like to supply your child with a more natural form of nutrition, fruit can be juiced or a shake can be made out of milk or soy milk mixed with fruit and vegetable juice and protein powder. Most of these children still need supplemental drinks to supply most of their calories and nutrition however the list below can be used to provide variety.

Foods To Liquify

FRUIT:   (Can use whole fruit or use 100% fruit juice), oranges, apples, bananas, peaches, pears, grapes

VEGETABLES:   (Can use whole vegetables or buy 100% Vegetable juice), carrots, spinach, kale, tomato, green beans

STARCHES:  Most starches such as potatoes and pasta are thick and work as effective thickeners; however for the child with sensory issues who will only accept thin liquids starches are not appropriate.

MEAT:  It is difficult to make meat drinkable, which is why drinks high in protein such as milk, soy milk or Pediasure are encouraged.

DAIRY:  Ice cream shake, milk, drinkable yogurt

This consistency is also easy to calorie boost.  Just add small amounts of fat or powder to add calories.
